I stumbled across a new (to me anyway) interpretation of the Sheela Na Gig name when looking for images of the Kirkwall sheela. On page 978 of the Celtic Encyclopedia vol 4 by Harry Mountain it lists among other more familiar translations The Idle Hole (Chilo na Gi) not quite sure what language that is in though. It seems to explain the line “Put money in your idle hole” in the song Sheela Na Gig though…

Well known expert in Japanese Studies Dr Stephen Turnbull, has released a new book called Japan’s Sexual Gods Shrines, Roles and Rituals of Procreation and Protection.
Japanese shrines have many deities represented by phalluses and female sexual objects. This book provides a gallery of photographs and locations along with details of their rituals, festivals.

Jack Roberts author of the Divine Hag of the Christian Celts is working on a new book on Sheela Na Gigs. He has teamed up with Meghan Rice who studied Sheela Na Gigs as part of her degree and has spoken on them the Megalithomania conference in Glastonbury
